How to get an overhead image to fit your DEM, from Google Earth

Jimbo from PGAX turned me on to this. It has been very useful when the Ortho images from the USGS seamless site are not clear enough or unavailable.

Obtain your course coordinates from Google Earth in your normal way

We will need in decimal degrees…
Approximate Center
Upper Left
Lower Right

Open the GoogleEarth.htm (;attachement at bottom of this post)by Right clicking on it and Open with Notepad

Replace the existing coordinates with your own course coordinates in the appropriate place. Change one coordinate at a time and don’t change anything but the numbers

Save your changes. Click Yes to do you want to savechanges

Download Webpage Capture (;FREE) from http://download.cnet.com/Webpage-Capture/3000-12512_4-10534387.html

Now you can double Click the GoogleEarth.htm logo. This will open up your Internet Explorer Browser.

Wait for the picture to load. This may take a little while.

Now click on the Webpage Capture Icon. Notice where your image is saved to. I have to click where the arrow is pointed to get the Webpage Capture icon to appear, I think because of my small screen resolution.

Now we can open our photo editing program to crop the image to fit the exact size of our DEM. I use Paint Shop Pro

There will be a pushpin in the upper left and lower right corners so you know where to crop to. Here is the upper left one.

Once cropped you can save the image as CoursenameOverhead.jpg

That should do it. Easy enough.

Hope this helps. Any questions email BULLPUPP@AOL.COM

Probably got lost from the site when the server crashed. I use this all the time and find it very useful. I have sent Jeff Jarvis a copy of the file and hopefully he can upload it when he has the time. If you require a copy from me send me a PM with your email address and I will send you the file.

Hiya Jim..I tried and i think it works here. When i took the webpage capture, i have a pic that is 16% ( 5000 x 5000 pixels )
When i open it with photoshop and i zoom in to 100% i have a clear map.

Note: i had to run Webpage capture as administrator:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Webpage Capture
Inside folder Webpage capture ....right click: webpage capture.exe.....properties..compatibility..and check box: Run as administrator...hit Apply

Hiya Jim...something wrong with your file. I added your coordinates to my file and it works for me.
I attached my GoogleEarth.htm in a zipfile with your coordinates. Try to capture webpage from this file.(; coordinates are already added )
Note: i have sent you the pic, just in case it is not working for you.
