I think this is a good tool for course designers doing a real course, It is named: Elevation Finder

https://www.freemaptools.com/elevation-finder.htm

When you are on the site, first in the map ( top left of map ) change it from Map to Satellite.

Now you will have satellite view.

Then add location ( street and city ), for example: Donckstraat Beringen ( location of a course in Belgium )

Now on top right side of map click the small square icon and you will have full window view

With mouse wheel you can zoom in or zoom out.

Now click on some points on the map and it will add markers.

When you go with mouse over each marker it will tell you the exact elevation in meters and feet.

Note: It can take a few minutes before the markers appear on the map

But it appears to show elevation ASL, not elevation of the local terrain (height of hills above the fairways, for example)

Yes it is not perfect, but when you put a marker on the fairway, and one on a hill then you can calculate the height difference.

You can move your mouse anywhere on the image and the elevation is displayed at the bottom of the map.

I made sure the "terrain layer" box was checked, but I cannot see how to see what the terrain elevation is, even left clicking the mouse on the terrain.

The way we are playing here you might want to throw the clubs in the lake. If you throw the clubs in the lake, you might miss the lake.

No course in the works: retired.

It should be on the bar at the bottom of the screen.

Thanks Bobby, good spot. I was expecting the elevation to be shown on the screen where the mouse was pointing. Never looked at the bottom tool bar. It is an age issue. Thanks buddy.
