I''m working on a small format for playing TW08 in a more simulated fashion. It won''t be perfect, but would mimic the real game of golf somewhat closer. It wouldn''t be very long or too involved, but would require you to make some modifications (that would be easily reversed if not preferred) and to use an "honors system" approach, i.e., don''t cheat yourself. It will be playable on all skill levels, novice to expert, though expert will naturally present the hardest challenge, though novice through advanced can still be set to present a more simulated style of play. Of course, it can be done online as well, as long as both players are willing to play by the guidelines set up and within the honors system. (I''ve never understood cheating the game and I never will.)

I''ll put out a guide for this in short time. Basically it will involve eliminating the aim arrow (which is easily done already with a mod here at coursedownloads in the utilities section: http://www.coursedownloads.com/extras/details.asp?id=874).

It will also involve altering a couple of camera views and eliminating the use do the putting grid on every level. There are no aim arrows or putting grids on a real golf course. It will also involve using only 3 basic points on the distance slider, which is supposed to emulate where your stance is in relation to the ball (actually I never checked if the game moves the player in relation to the ball when you move this slider.... I doubt EA worked that in, but you never know.)

The instructions, in both .doc and .pdf formats, were submitted for approval to the miscellaneous utilities section.

Please provide feedback/constructive criticism as wanted. Thanks.

Thanks Pat.

To the users: I did find a few typos after uploading but nothing earth shattering. Also, some of the screen shots captured the wrong camera type (i.e., what you would see in the cam editor), but the view of the screen shot itself is correct as is the explanation of which camera to modify.

The nice thing about this is that you would still have a few extra cameras available to modify should you want other realistic angles. I still like camera 8''s default view to check out the result of the opponent''s shot and on some putting views were I can''t get the look I want. So please make a suggestion as to another alteration in keeping with the spirit of this.

Unfortunately, I couldn''t find the file to where the camera changes are made (so that going back and forth between custom cameras and default cameras would be easier). Also, the changes seem to stay in place even if you change golfers/profiles.

Enjoy!

This sounds pretty interesting; I'm going to give it a try.

Thanks for putting this together.

Thanks smarshallt. In the bit I''''ve tried it, it has made offline play much more interesting. I''''ve also upped the abilities for imported pros (as it doesn''''t seem possible to tweak the built-in pros).

I''''ve found that I couldn''''t resist using Cam 8 to look at my shots as they hit on or near the green.

I''''ve also found that because of some of the "in-between" distances on putts, I''''ve used Cam 3 to hit once I have the putt lined up and then have Cam 5 (ball cam) set to Fast or Very Fast which would approximate first hitting the ball (Cam 3) and then looking up and walking toward the ball as it approaches the hole (Cam 5).

The other thing I''''ve found is that because you have to coordinate your hit and then looking up, it somewhat emulates keeping your head down. If you "rush" to look up (e.g., hit Cam 2), you are more likely to hit an errant shot, like in real golf. I''''ve also found that this makes me play somewhat more controlled and conservative since I don''''t necessarily know the EXACT distance to where I''''m landing, again like in the real game.

Also, one correction in the instructions: I noted that using "Find Flag" is allowable, but pointed out the wrong cam. You''''ll want to click on "Find Flag" and then immediately hit Cam 2 (the forward looking view).

Please let me know what you think, good or bad.

Hi daflyboys,

Finally got around to trying the simulation approach. I have to say its pretty good. Gives you a more immersive feel to the game although it does take a bit of getting used to, especially on the tee switching back and forth from the down view to forward view. I really like the close in viewpoint around the greens and putting.

Sorry...didn't see your response until now as I've been ill and in the hospital for a few days.

I'm glad you got some use out of it and this is exactly what I was going for.... you said it best when using the word immersive. I'm hoping this makes offline play more interesting and make it feel like a bit of a new game to some degree. Thanks for the kind words and the feedback.

Just saw a neat feature from The Golf Club. Apparently there is a way to turn off the actual golf velocity which makes sense because who has that kind of information available when you're golfing other than the feel of it. Going to look into how that might work in TW 08.
